Two Im a programmer and beta tested this game when its testing phase which was private before it even hit steam. And three in the coding there is a few lines that determine game speed per unit count if you notice as unit count goes up the game will periodically reduce speed so the game flow is smooth.
I run a hex core '6-core processor' and I still get the slowdown. That's just coding nothing to do with your CPU. At the time duo-core was what this was game was designed on. Also there are mods out there you just need to know where to look.

Hm, I still use core maximizer on smaller maps for playing against 3 AIs. I use one of the last Sorian AIs released and do not have that much of a slow down using the rest of the game vanilla.
